On Sorrento's
origins there is a legend created by Diodoro Siculo, who
thought that Sorrento was founded by Liparo, Ausone's child,
who was King of Ausoni's population, and child of
Ulisse and Circe. By following this legend, the origing of
Sorrento is due to an italic population, the population of Ausoni,
one of the most ancient ethnic group. But Sorrento during the
pre-romans period was influenced by the greek culture, this is
proved by the presence of a greek town-planning, and some other
monuments such us: Porta Parsano, Porta of Marina Grande,
and by the prence in Punta Campanella of the Athenaion.
The big Temple where
it was celebrated Atena's cult, was founded by Ulisse and it was
dedicated at first to the Mermaids' cult.
All these elements
contribute to testify the greek presence in a period of time
between 474 and 420 b.C., then Sorrento was conquered by
Sanniti. Sorrento revolted against Rome during a social war
in the Nucerina league, but it was reconquered together with
Stabia in 90 a.C. by Papius Multius and then by Silla.
After the peace there was the presence of
Sillani colony.
In 79 a.C. Sorrento
was victim of a terrible Vesuvio's eruption, which destroyed
Pompei, Ercolano and Stabia.
